A Healthy Thanksgiving Holiday

To prevent overeating on Thanksgiving, make sure you eat all of your other meals and snacks before the "big meal."  This may help prevent overeating.  Serve some healthy, low-carb appetizers such as fresh veggies with lowfat dip.   Consider serving a salad before the meal to help fill the stomach with some fiber.  Protein and veggies won't have as much of an effect on the blood sugar as the carb dishes, so try to fill your dinner plate with more of these items.  Try to keep the carb dishes limited to 1/4 of the plate if possible.  Eat your meal slowly as it takes your body about 20 minutes to signal to your brain that you are full - take sips of water, set down your fork, and chew each bite thoroughly to help you slow down.  Consider taking a walk after the "big meal" to help bring elevated blood sugars back down.  Try to wait an hour or two between the big meal and dessert if possible.  Consider some healthier lower carb dessert ideas or fresh fruit.  Remember that portion control is key.
